Functional Movement Screen™
Who should have a Functional Movement Screen?
Individuals who are starting new or different exercise program, avid exercisers and athletes. The FMS is for young and old alike, adding another perspective of human movement. This test help to clarify problems improve performance and decrease injuries.
Many people are performing physical activity even though they are inefficient in their fundamental movements. These individuals create poor movement patterns, and train around pre- existing problems. This will cause muscular imbalances and may result in injuries and/or poor performance. The FMS will identify these problems, and may prevent injuries from occurring.
What is the benefit of having the FMS at Accelerated Physio and Sports Rehab?
If an individual has a low score during testing, there may be an injury present. The physiotherapist will then schedule an full orthopedic assessment and educate the individual on what to do to avoid further injury to the joint or muscle.
The FMS has been used by many professional sport organizations, including the Montreal Canadians, Toronto Blue Jays and the Indianapolis Colts.
How does the Functional Movement Screen work?
The FMS looks at a movement pattern and identifies the “weak link”. A “weak link” is considered to be a physical or functional limitation. Once the “weak link’ is found, an individualized exercise program is developed, assigning specific exercises to correct the faulty movement pattern.
